Sleep and Insomnia

Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Insomnia may be the result of medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, stress, anxiety, depression, menopause or chronic pain.

It may be also be caused by nutritional deficiencies or the overuse of stimulants (i.e. caffeine).

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for the regulation of our sleep and wake cycles, hence its recommendation for treatment of insomnia.

It has been favoured by many specialists as an alternative to prescribing sedatives such as benzodiazepines which can be addictive, or antihistamines which can cause hangover effects the next day.
